Education
Education is one of the most important aspects of Judaism and congregational life.
Pirkei Avot teaches “find yourself a teacher, and acquire a friend” a simple teaching for one of our deepest core values in our synagogue. One of the most important parts of building a sacred community is education. Every member of our community, from the youngest tots, to our grade school children, to our teenagers in high school, and every adult in our synagogue has the opportunity to engage in learning.
From Preschool to Adult Education
Our programming which ranges from our Preschool and Torah School, weekly Torah Study, adult education classes and minicourses, to movies and scholarly lectures are deeply engaging and foster a sense of community and engagement. The learning we do at our synagogue creates the threads of meaning that weave together to form the fabric of Jewish identity, ethics, spirituality, and social action. Temple Emanu-El takes immense pride in our commitment to education for all age groups.
Preschool
The Price Family Preschool of Temple Emanu-El was created to provide a quality early childhood experience in a warm, nurturing Jewish environment. We offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets the unique needs, interests, and learning style of each child.
Torah School & Youth Programming
Our Torah School values teaching our kids by doing Judaism and prioritizing experiential learning and creating a camp-like environment.
Community Jewish High
We strive to create a community of Jewish teens who learn together and who will forge connections that will extend beyond the confines of our classrooms.
Introduction to Judaism
Introduction to Judaism is an engaging multi-session course for anyone interested in exploring Jewish life through a Reform lens. Open to all, this course is perfect for interfaith couples, those raising Jewish children, spiritual seekers, individuals considering conversion, and Jews who want a meaningful adult Jewish learning experience.
Adult Education
Classes, events, and programs are open to Temple members and the community at large. New people bring new and interesting ideas. If you have suggestions or Jewish-related instructional talents you’d like to share, or if you would like to join the committee, which meets once a month, contact us at adulted@teesd.org.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah
A bar mitzvah (boys) or bat mitzvah (girls) is a coming-of-age ritual in Judaism. According to Jewish law, before children reach a certain age, the parents are responsible for their child’s actions. Once Jewish children reach that age, they are said to “become” b’nai mitzvah, at which point they begin to be held accountable for their own actions. At Temple Emanu-El San Diego, the student will begin working with one of our tutors eight months prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah service.
Kabbalat Torah
Kabbalat Torah (Confirmation) was instituted about 200 years ago in Germany. The first such ceremony was held in America in 1846. Our Kabbalat Torah is taught as part of the Community Jewish High. Classes are held in the Temple Emanu-El Library on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm.
