Adult Ed Film: The Concert – CANCELLED

Saturday, November 13, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We apologize, but this event has been cancelled for this date.

The Adult Education Committee continues the series of award winning Jewish films from around the world with The Concert, directed by Radu Mihaileanu. The movie, made in France in 2009, won the Donatello Award for Best European Film.

Filipov (Aleksei Guskov) is a janitor, who was once a great conductor. Thirty years ago, his career ended when he refused to fire the Jews in his company, despite orders from the Kremlin. But after the fall of the Soviet Union, he sees an invitation for the Bolshoi ballet orchestra to come to Paris for a concert. He steals the invitation, forms his own orchestra from the formerly banned Gypsy and Jewish musicians he knew in the past, and goes to Paris pretending to be the Bolshoi. As played by Guskov, we believe in this conductor’s talent and integrity, and we see the humiliation that he has lived with for 30 years. The movie has the impish pleasure that comes with any good movie involving a scam and an impersonation.

Laurie Baron will introduce the film and lead a discussion about it after the screening.
